Full Description
This length of wall was located on the southern bank of the former stream at the eastern end of the site, at a depth of c. 0.7m belowground level. A length of 4.7m was exposed, with further walling possibly extending beneath the south-east baulk. It comprised three courses and was constructed using angular pieces of skerry. The wall had been built into a layer of brown to purple clay containing 18th/19th century pottery. A deposit of reddish brown to grey clay was observed to abut the wall to the south and to overlie another layer.
The dating evidence would therefore indicate that deposit purple clay deposit and probably wall date to when the stream was straightened and the land divided into rectilinear fields between 1791 and 1835. The wall was probably constructed to reinforce the stream’s bank and may also have served to retain subsoil that might otherwise have moved downslope and filled the stream.
