Full Description
…built in about 1900, at the rear of a row of contemporary small houses, on a previously unimproved plot which was recorded as arable land in the tithe apportionment of 1839. The workshop faces a short access road between two ranges of houses. The building appears to have been constructed as a frame-knitters’ workshop, for the making of knitted stockings. This had been a significant industry in Nottinghamshire from the C18, with 90 per cent of the nation’s stocking frames working in the East Midlands by the last quarter of the C18. The industry was largely domestic, usually with upper floors of homes given over to the frames, with their windows greatly extended into continuous glazing across the whole width of the elevation to maximise the natural light. 7a Furlong Street was not adapted from a domestic building but appears to have been built as a small, independent workshop. The building was later used as a workshop by an engineering firm to house lathes and milling machines, and latterly has been disused. An attached block to the west end was removed later in the C20. The workshop is a simple red-brick building of three bays and two storeys, with four-light, timber casement windows set in segmental arched openings. There is a taking-in door at first-floor level to one long elevation, between the upper-floor windows. The roof is covered in plain clay tile. Internally, the two floors each form a single open space, with a simple timber stair linking them. 7a Furlong Street is a remnant of the historically important frame-knitting industry in Nottingham, and therefore has claims to local interest.
