Full Description
In the north of the site, a clay tobacco pipe was recovered from the fill of a natural feature. Two fragments. Stems only, burnt and used, very abraded. Late 17th- early 18th century. They are probably fairly local products, perhaps manufactured in nearby Mansfield, although pipe makers have only been identified in that town as early as the mid 19th century, or perhaps Newark, where pipe making is known from the mid 17th century.
Four struck flints were collected from the ploughsoil and topsoil of a trench in the south end of the site. The struck items are all waste flints from the early stages of core or tool preparation. One patinated flake belongs to a blade based industry and is probably Neolithic in date. One flake appeared to be of Bronze Age origin and two others so idiosyncratic as to be undatable to other than the prehistoric era.
