Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation consisting of 22 trenches covering a total of 1760m2 was carried out on land at Lindhurst Farm, near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, in advance of a large-scale mixed-use development.
Previous archaeological work in Holdingham parish has identified evidence for Roman, Anglo-Saxon and medieval occupation in the area, with a large programme of works on land to the west of the present site encountering remains of a significant Anglo-Saxon settlement.
Archaeological remains on the current site proved to be relatively sparse, with concentrations in the north-west corner and the south-eastern quadrant; a row of four trenches in the south-eastern quadrant all displayed features containing evidence of burning. Few features produced stratified finds, but these, combined with the stratigraphic evidence, suggest that the medieval ploughland was divided from an earlier activity horizon by a layer of subsoil. The dating remains on a broad spectrum, but it seems plausible that open-field cultivation was not introduced in this area until the 12th century or later, and consequently that features sealed by the subsoil, but otherwise undateable, are likely to be early medieval or pre-Conquest.
