Full Description

Although no features of archaeological significance were identified by the geophysical survey in the northernmost area of the site, the ditches encountered in four trenches may represent former field boundaries or drainage features relating to previous agricultural systems. Notably, these were seen to differ in alignment from the post-medieval/modern field boundaries which, based on historic OS mapping, have not changed substantially since the 19th century. None of these features produced any finds or other dateable material but they may be representative of further peripheral agricultural activity relating to the known Iron Age/Romano-British settlement area further to the south. Alternatively, as they also appeared to differ in alignment to the Romano-British “brickfield” field system recorded on aerial photographs of the Site then a medieval or early post-medieval date could be suggested, the boundary pattern then having been reorganised as a result of Enclosure.

The same may apply for the relatively poorly preserved linear ditches along the western edge of the site, observed in three trenches which were also undated with the exception of a single fragment of early post-medieval pottery (16th – 18th century) recovered from the fill of a remnant ditch in one of the trenches.
