Full Description
The post-medieval trackway may be of comparatively recent date as it also appeared to be in alignment with an existing gateway to High Oakham Farm and therefore may have been in use up until relatively recent times. Early maps of the area were consulted to assess whether the trackway had been recorded previously. In particular, the 1740 map of the trackway known ad the Coal Way Wain was examined. However, the map shows this as aligned northwest to southeast while the trackway recorded during the watching brief was aligned northeast to southwest. While it is not impossible that the trackway was connected with the Coal Way Wain, it does not appear to be the trackway itself. Material from the trackway included 20th century pottery so it may be a later feature.
