Full Description
Now demolished (Planning Application 18/00422/FUL). Former Temperance billiard hall. Brick-built building under a box profile asbestos cement sheet roof. Art Deco inspired with segmental windows over a central door on the pedimented Villa Street elevation; the remaining elevations are all finished in plain brick, the north west facing elevation being a potentially earlier wall retained within the building. The rear elevation houses a large fanlight window. The former snooker hall was constructed as a Temperance Billiard Hall in 1928 after the local architect George Grimwood. The Temperance Billiard Hall Company was established in 1906 in Pendleton Lancashire, which at the time had a strong temperance tradition, the temperance movement aimed to combat alcoholism of the era by establishing “dry” recreational facilities to rival public houses. Following World War II the temperance movement faded as did the popularity of billiard halls, many, including Villa Street were converted to snooker halls and remained as such until at least 2013. Villa Street was later used as a fitness studio and currently for storage. (1)
