Full Description
The Control Tower is a non-designated heritage asset which was originally part of the former RAF Wigsley complex, a Second World War bomber airfield and satellite of RAF Swinderby. The Control Tower has a unique pattern that does not correspond to standard types for this kind of structure. It was built largely in a single phase in 1941 to very early 1942, the RAF station becoming operational in February of the latter year. Soon after, probably during the Second World War, a new room was added as an extension to the upper storey. Minor alterations involving the blocking of a couple of windows took place, one of these by the late 1950s. More recently all the ground floor windows have been blocked and the framing of upper storey windows removed. (1)
