Full Description

Several later 19th century additions, alterations or repairs were recorded. These later features were generally identified by the use of standardised engineered bricks and the presence of other materials characteristic of the latter half of the 19th century. These were presumed to be a result of maintenance and refurbishment work carried out on the property.

An insubstantial brick wall was orientated roughly north-south and constructed with Victorian engineered bricks. It overlay an 18th century deposit. It was not keyed in to the farmhouse and may have been a garden feature.

A floor was constructed with engineering bricks and located within the western end of the building. It may have been part of repairs or refurbishment work. It overlay a deposit which was building rubble containing Victorian waste.

A north-south orientated ditch was recorded at the very west of the site. It contained an abundance of 19th century domestic wares such as yellow wares course earthen wares, white wares of plates and dishes. The ditch may have been a garden feature.

A sub oval pit was cut through 17th or 18th century foundation on the south side of the southern outer wall of the Georgian building. The pit contained un-diagnostic brick fragments. A further small circular pit to the south of this contained similar material as well as 18th century slipware and Chinese porcelain. This pottery is thought to be residual.

A red tubular ceramic ‘land drain’ was typical of those commonly used during the 19th century. It is thought to have replaced Georgian brick box drain.
