Full Description

To the north: A large ditch was excavated towards the south-west of the trench. This ditch ran on a north-west to south-east alignment, and measured 2.07 m in width, with a depth of 0.89m. Three fills were recorded, with the earliest fill, being composed of a mid-orangey brown sand, with occasional sub rounded medium sized stones evenly distributed throughout. This deposit was overlain by another fill, which was light greyish brown in colour and composed of a fine sand, with occasional charcoal inclusions. The latest deposit was a light pinkish brown colour, and was composed of fine sand.

The large feature in one evaluation trench appears to be the remnants of a boundary ditch, although no such features were depicted on the geophysical interpretation. Several fills were recorded within, suggesting different periods of backfilling. The darker fill appears to have been deliberately deposited as waste burned material.

To the south: The possible right-angled ditch segment in another evaluation trench is not too dissimilar from a segment of a ditch found during another archaeological evaluation in the field directly south of site. No further evidence of the ditch was found in the surrounding trenches, and no ditch of a similar scale was seen within any other trenches across the site. In plan, the ditch segment appears to form the southern corner of a possible field system, which could be situated to the north-east of site. Alternatively, the feature, and the pit it truncates could both be natural in origin.

The ditch segment appeared L-shaped in plan, with a right-angled corner towards the centre. The profile of the ditch was deep and U shaped, measuring 1 m wide and 0.60 m deep. It contained two fills. The earliest being composed of a light yellowish brown clayey sand with occasional flecks of iron-panning. This deposit was overlain by a second fill, which was a mid-orangey brown colour and composed of a clayey sand.
