Abstract/Summary
A scheme of archaeological trial trench evaluation was undertaken on land to the north of Rayton Lane, Osberton, Worksop. The proposed development involves the creation of a 34MW solar farm across three agricultural fields located to the north and south of Rayton Lane, covering a total area of c. 47.8 ha. The current trial trench evaluation follows previous trenching undertaken during 2024 to the west of the 2025 evaluation.
This phase of evaluation covers the east half of the easternmost field of the proposed development, and covers an area of 6.2 ha. It comprised the excavation of twenty-four trial trenches, each measuring 50m by 1.8m. This represented a 3% sample of the land that will be directly impacted by the proposed development. Twelve of these trenches contained no archaeological features, with the other twelve containing a small number of features and deposits. With the exception of boundary ditches, most of the exposed features appeared to represent natural gullies aligned north-south, which followed the natural downward slope of the ground towards the river Ryton to the south. These features were not recorded by geophysical survey, and no finds were recovered from any of the excavated features. The absence of cultural material and limited numbers of features suggests the remains resulted from agricultural use of the area.
