Full Description
Outbuildings (now house) to Maley Cottage.
Outbuildings of mainly C19 materials with evidence of earlier fabric. 1731 sketch plan of Trinity College’s Estate, Thurgarton shows a building in this location.…the outbuildings display a complex development: stone walls survive at the centre (north part of 2-storey barn); extended and raised in 2¾" brick; a single storey extension added to the north (contemporary to western extension of cottage) then all repaired in 3" brick including the north gable to the single-storey part and various openings blocked or altered throughout…Extensively altered and extended, and documentary research demonstrates that they already occupied the site in some form in 1731 and shows them largely in their present plan form by the turn of the 19th century. The two-storey barn is certainly earliest and contains the stone walls of an earlier structure. Historically, this property occupied the boundary of the Maley Cottage property and its western neighbour: openings in both sides of the building suggest it may have been used in common between the two properties. A single-storey outbuilding added to the north probably served as a stable. (1)
