Full Description

The earliest archaeological remains are feasibly represented by pits observed within two trenches. No dateable finds were recovered from the pit in the first trench. A small amount of charcoal was recovered; however, species identification was not possible due to condition. Within a second trench, two pits were excavated. The smaller pit was found to contain the remains of two vessels, thought most likely to be Iron Age in date, and positioned on a bed of deliberately positioned flat-topped stones. The pit was probably therefore used for cooking, with the stones having been noticeably altered by fire, displaying clouding and heat scorching to their surfaces. Along with the prehistoric pottery, flint, hazelnut shell fragments and charcoal were recovered from the fill of the smaller pit.

The adjacent pit was filled with cracked/heat-affected sub-rounded stones, commonly known as ‘pot-boilers’, and probably associated with the smaller pit.

The recovered fragments from two vessels were recovered from a possible cooking pit, are possibly mid-late Iron Age, though specialist assessment has indicated that the fabrics are unusual and may also be Anglo-Saxon in origin.
