Title Brecks Solar Farm, Gamston, Nottinghamshire: Archaeological Evaluation Report
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2022

Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken at land at Brecks Farm, Brick Yard Road, Retford, Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire. The site is c.34.4 hectares comprising arable fields bounded by low hedgerows and occasional tree and is located within the jurisdiction of Bassetlaw District Council. The evaluation was commissioned by the Client to inform a planning application for the development of a solar farm. The archaeological work was undertaken over seven weeks between the 8th August and 21st October 2022 and comprised the excavation of 83 trenches across five fields. The investigation revealed two pits within one trench, and a single pit within another trench, which potentially date to the later prehistoric period. Fragments from two vessels were recovered from a possible cooking pit are possibly mid-late Iron Age, though specialist assessment has indicated that the fabrics are unusual and may also be Anglo-Saxon in origin. Although a possible rubbing stone was recovered from a ditch in a further trench, it is likely to be residual in origin. The ditches recorded across seven trenches remain undated, however they likely represent agricultural activity dated broadly from the medieval to post-medieval periods.
