Full Description

Limited post‐hole features probably relating to field boundaries.

One trench was excavated in the third evaluation area, towards the north centre of that area, and measured 50m x 2m on a north/south axis. Towards the northern extent of the trench, a possible sub‐circular posthole was identified, 0.28m in diameter by 0.22m wide with steep sloping sides breaking sharply to a narrow concave base, 0.1m deep. The only fill consisted of a dark grey‐brown sand‐clay, with a small amount of charcoal inclusions, 0.1m thick which produced a limited amount of charcoal. This feature was overlain directly by topsoil, 0.23m thick, with no colluvium present.

A second trench was excavated in the third evaluation area, towards the north‐east of that area, and measured 50m x 2m on a north/south axis. Towards the centre of the trench, four sub‐square/irregularly shaped post‐holes were identified, three of which were excavated and recorded. The three post‐holes were roughly 0.38m in diameter, with steep concave sides breaking gently to concave bases, 0.19‐0.25m deep. The fills were uniformly a dark brown‐grey silt‐sand with very small amounts of charcoal inclusions, varying from 0.19‐0.25m thick. One fill produced a limited amount of charcoal. No finds were present in any of the post‐holes, and the features were overlain directly by topsoil, 0.3m thick, with no colluvium present. The fourth post‐hole was identified on the surface as a post‐medieval rectangular fence post.
