Abstract/Summary
An archaeological trial trench evaluation was undertaken on the site of a proposed sustainable urban expansion for 2,250 dwellings and associated infrastructure on land at Gamston Fields, Tollerton, Nottinghamshire.
In total, 145 trenches were excavated across three different areas and in four separate groupings, with one trench being a variation from the agreed layout featured in the WSI, and comprising an amalgamation of several others, following a site meeting with the consultant and curator, and the agreed requirement to investigate variation in the geological sequence observed between two areas of trenching in one evaluation area.
In general, a very limited amount of archaeological remains was identified throughout the evaluation areas, suggesting either a general absence of prior activity, or that the traces of prior occupation had been significantly re‐worked and denuded by a combination of colluvial activity and post‐Medieval to modern ploughing. While a small assemblage of lithic artefacts was recovered from the site, indicating a back ground level of prehistoric activity across the site, the majority of such artefacts derived from colluvial layers or topsoil/subsoil deposits and are therefore likely not in situ.
