Full Description
Nissen hut aligned N/S, relocated from original location (possible in what is now High Wood) to 230m SE of High Wood. Only the corrugated iron skin on a steel frame survives. Formed from just over half a cylinder, Nissen huts were primarily used as barracks. Royal Engineer Peter Norman Nissen developed the design with fellow engineers for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. First produced in 1916 the huts were designed with portability in mind as well as economical use of materials. This example was constructed on Ossington Airfield during its operations use between 1941 and 1946. (1)
