Extant Nissen hut aligned NE/SW within High Wood. Formed from just over half a cylinder, Nissen huts were primarily used as barracks. Royal Engineer Peter Norman Nissen developed the design with fellow engineers for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. First produced in 1916 the huts were designed with portability in mind as well as economical use of materials. This example was constructed on Ossington Airfield during its operations use between 1941 and 1946. (1)
