Full Description

A wide ditch, running west-north-west to east-south-east. The full profile of the ditch could not be exposed in the width of the trench, but it is estimated at about 3m wide; the excavated section was 0.64m deep, indicating that the ditch had been a significant landscape feature at its original ground level. The exposed portion of its profile appeared to be stepped or undulating. A substantial assemblage of hand-made pottery, datable only as prehistoric, and an early Neolithic flint knife were retrieved from its single fill. This ditch was identified as corresponding to a large ditch encountered on the other side of Nottingham Road during a previous phase of works, and was further investigated in Area 3 of the excavation.
