Abstract/Summary

A programme of archaeological evaluation trenching, followed by targeted archaeological excavation, was undertaken in advance of development works on land within the Phase 3 and 3b areas of works of the Fairham Pastures development, to the south of the town of Clifton in the Borough of Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire. This project forms part of a scheme of archaeological mitigation required as a condition of planning permission, in order to ensure that any features of archaeological importance are identified and appropriate mitigation undertaken prior to works commencing on site. The archaeological programme revealed a palimpsest landscape, altered and added to during the Iron Age and the Roman period. A sequence of long-distance linear features on the north side of the site coincide with features recorded by previous archaeological work to the west and appear to have been in use during the Iron Age with possible earlier antecedents; a segmented ditch, perpendicular to the sequence of ditches and pit alignments, is currently without parallel in the wider area of archaeological investigations. At the south side of the site, a large ring-ditch and parts of an enclosure ditch, with possible traces of a rectangular building within, appear to have been incorporated into a mid-Roman system of rectilinear enclosures. One of the smaller enclosures contained the remains of a small kiln or oven, probably for pottery manufacture, also of mid-Roman date: an unusual and significant find within the county.
