Full Description

The majority of the discrete or partially exposed undated features in this excavation area also seem likely to be associated with the enclosure complex.

At the northern excavation edge, one ditch was on roughly the same line as, and of similar proportions to, one enclosure ditch and had a similar greyish-brown sandy silt fill , suggesting that this ditch was also part of the enclosure complex, possibly intersecting one of the enclosure's longitudinal ditches outside the excavated area.

A single sherd from a stamped mortarium (no legible portion of the stamp remained) dating to AD 150-200 was retrieved from a pit adjoining the west side of a ditch extension fragment. Unusually for features in this area, the asymmetric profile of this pit suggested that it might have had a long enough lifespan to have required maintenance in the form of excavation of accumulated sediment, if not a complete recut.

Three pits were all very close to another enclosure ditch, suggesting that, like the dated pit, they were contemporary with the enclosures (although one pit had an irregular profile and fills that appeared to have been disturbed, and was probably heavily affected, if not wholly produced, by a natural process such as animal burrowing or tree rooting). Another pit (very large) was partially exposed at the south-west corner of the site, whose plan dimensions of 3.75m+ x 2.25m and flat base suggested a possible quarry-pit, although it was no more than 0.30m deep, also produced two sherds of Roman pottery from its single fill and may have been contemporary with the enclosure
complex: if so, it may have been a clay extraction pit for the construction of the possible pottery kiln.
