Full Description

One excavation area featured two substantial ditches, approximately perpendicular to one another, although no relationship could be established, as the point at which their projected lines would have intersected lay outside the excavated area.

One ditch which ran north-north-east to south-south-west across the western corner of the excavation area, seems likely to be part of the same feature as a ditch in the excavation area to the south: the two stretches of ditch were in line with one another, were of very similar dimensions (at 1.26m wide and 0.56m deep, this ditch was 40mm
narrower and 10mm deeper than the ditch in the southern area) and had similar broad, flaring profiles. Both also had two fills, although the profile of upper fill in one ditch section is more suggestive of an unrecorded recut. Although the excavated section through the ditch produced no finds, pottery from the fills of the ditch in the southern area suggested a mid-Roman date, and so it is most likely that it was part of the mid-Roman field system identified in another segment of the excavation.

A ditch sequence ran east to west across the south side of the excavation area. It consisted of an original ditch and a recut, although the irregular profiles of the original ditch suggest that the ditch had been maintained over a long period of time, with more than one episode of cleaning and recutting. The earlier and later ditches appeared to diverge slightly towards the west. Although no finds were retrieved from any of the excavated sections, the ditch dimensions, ranging from 0.54m to 1.20m in width and 0.32m to 0.38m in depth where profiles were complete, fell within the range of the east-to-west-aligned ditches forming part of enclosure group, thought to be Roman, in previously mentioned other excavation area.

A short length of curvilinear gully was located directly adjacent to the north side of ditch sequence: this feature was narrow and shallow, and no assessment of its function could be made, although it is possible that it was a surviving remnant of an annular or penannular feature within an enclosure. The south side (earlier cut) of the ditch was cut by a shallow, flat-based pit.
