Full Description
The area in the angle of the two possible enclosure ditches was occupied by a cluster of small pits, post-holes and short lengths of gully, which appeared to be grouped in a rough rectangle oriented north-west to south-east and measuring roughly 15m x 8m. Each of the long sides of the possible structure was formed by a narrow, shallow gully with a sequence of intercutting pits to its north-west.
The north-east side consisted of a slightly curvilinear gully with a probably circular pit cut by an elongated oval pit.
In the south-west side, a gully was cut by a post-hole or small pit on its outer edge; this side incorporated two pairs of shallow, flat-based intercutting pits cutting a larger pit and pne pit cutting another larger pit.
The shorter north-west side consisted of a sub-oval pit with three small pits or post-holes. The shorter south-east side was more complex. The most likely elements of this end of the possible structure were two intercutting pits, which formed an approximate line with a post-hole cutting a south-western gully; another post-hole lay outside the feature group on this line and may have been associated with it, although it was some distance removed from the group.
A circular pit lay slightly to the west of the line, just within the putative structure, while a cluster of very small features (one post-hole, two narrow pits and a post-hole) all lay close to it within the southern corner of the group and may have represented an internal partition or structure.
Two fragments of ditch lay on a line which ran down the centre line of the feature group with one element cutting a pit, but could not be interpreted as coherent parts of a possible structure.
No dating evidence was retrieved from any of the component features of the group: if they did represent a structure, it could have lain within an enclosure of which two sides were formed by the substantial ditches in the excavation area. None of the component features had a heat-affected appearance or significantly charcoal-rich fill, which might have suggested a hearth, but their shallowness indicates that the ground level here has been significantly reduced, and a hearth with a base on the contemporary ground surface might have left no trace. Further to the south, near the north side of the excavation area to the south, a substantial quantity of charred cereal remains was retrieved from an environmental sample in the possible continuation of an enclosure ditch, and it is possible that this deposit was associated with occupation here.
