Full Description

Concrete marker located in North Wood. The letters G.P.O. and FT are clearly visible and the distance figures are missing. (1)
G.P.O. (General Post Office) posts were sited to show the route of underground telegraph cables, and their joints. The early cables were manufactured in relatively short lengths so had underground joints which needed to be located. The marker posts denoted the distance and direction of the nearest cable. During WW2 the metal distance figures were taken off or not fitted to the marking posts in the interests of security. (2)
