Full Description

One trial trench contained a ditch and four plough furrows. The ditch, oriented on a north-south orientation, corresponds with a former field boundary that was identified in the geophysical survey. The ditch contained a single dark reddish brown clayey silt fill which contained mid/late 1st/early 2nd-century pottery. The ditch was cut by a plough furrow towards its western side, indicating that ploughing activity post-dated the boundary ditch.

A second trial trench contained a ditch and four plough furrows, all oriented north-south. The ditch corresponds with the direction of a linear anomaly identified by the geophysical survey but is positioned approximately 8m to the west. It contained two fills, the basal fill comprising a firm mid-reddish-brown clay with occasion charcoal and a single sherd of mid to late 1st/early 2nd-century pottery. The upper fill comprised mid-greyish brown clay with occasional charcoal and a sherd of 2nd/3rd century pottery. Based on the geophysical survey, dating material and the alignment of the features, it is almost certain that this ditch is a continuation of first-mentioned ditch observed in previous trial trench.

A further trench contained a single pit towards its north-eastern limits. It was ovoid in plan with a U-shaped section. The pit contained two fills, with the basal fill comprising mid-orangey brown silty clay. The upper fill comprised mid greyish brown silty clay with large cobble inclusions. Late 1st/early 2nd-century pottery was recovered from the upper fill.

Sherds of Romano-British pottery dating to the 1st and 2nd centuries were recovered from the sinuous north to south aligned ditch at the western end of the site targeted by two if the trial trenches. The geophysical survey indicates that this forms part of the field system which does not extend very far into the site. The pit also contained pottery of a similar date suggesting it was contemporary with these features, although its isolated and distant position relative to them is noted.
