The site is approximately 30.65 hectares and is located on land to the west of Winkburn Farm, approximately 2km to the west of Winkburn village. The site comprises three fields and is bounded to the east by Roe Wood, to the west by Nut Wood and to the north and south by arable land. The evaluation initially comprised the excavation of 34 trenches, all measuring 50m by 2m. An additional trench measuring 65m by 2m was added to the scheme and another trench was extended by 7.5m based on the initial results. The trial trenching confirmed the presence of both Iron Age and Romano-British remains in the form of ditches and two pits. Evidence of post-medieval agricultural practices was demonstrated across the site, with plough furrows and field drains present, as well as drainage ditches in the eastern part of the site. Modern land drains were present within nine trenches. The location of each land drain corresponded with linear anomalies identified by the geophysical survey. The majority of drains were gravel land drains. A ceramic land drain was present in one trench running across the centre of the trench on an east-west orientation. Large plastic drainpipes were present within the same trench and a further evaluation trench. Plough furrows were present across site and were observed in the majority of trenches. The furrows were all on an approximate north to south orientation and corresponded with weak linear anomalies identified by geophysical survey. Small fragments of white-glazed pottery were found on the surface of several plough furrows, suggesting a post-medieval date for ploughing activity. No dating evidence was recovered from within the furrows themselves.
