Full Description
The Tithe Barn was demolished, along with surrounding buildings, in 1960 as part of a scheme to create more housing in Newark despite attempts by some to preserve it.
At least some of the timbers used in the construction of the barn showed signs of having been reused, and there is the suggestion that the roof beams were from an old church of the village of Osmondthorpe, once situated outside the medieval walls of Newark, off Northgate. It is also thought that the Lovers Lane site is not the original and that the barn may have been moved there in the eighteenth century when the outer walls were replaced with brick. In an Ordination issued by the Archibishop of York in AD 1426 it is possible to infer that both the vicarage and the Tithe Barn were located slightly to the north of the church, roughly the site of the Mount School (Warner 1996, 12).
As a result of this dendrochronological analysis, it is now known that at least seven timers used in the construction of this barn were felled some time between AD 1410-30, with the possibility that a further three were also felled at this time. There had been the suggestion that the timbers used in the construction of the barn were reused, especially the roof timbers. However, the sampling included posts as well as roof timbers so if the roof timbers were resued from an earlier date, then all the others would be too. This is unlikely. They may, of course, be a reconstruction, as also suggested. The timbers have now dissapeared. It should be noted that the sample with the last-ring dated to AD 1399 has 149 rings to the heartwood/sapwood boundary and so at the very least we would expect felling to be towards the end of this range, nearer AD 1430 than AD 1410, if not a little later.
Locations uncertain, points are rough: SK 79995 54076 (possible original location), SK 80059 54281 (possible relocation site)
