Full Description

Railway Station built in 1875 on the Great Northern Railway

Dismantled railway. The Great Northern Railway, facing exclusion from the profitable Nottinghamshire coalfields, proposed a far reaching scheme to break the Midlands Railway's near monopoly in the Erewash Valley. The scheme was to run a line, from Colwick on the Nottingham and Grantham line, north to tap the undeveloped Bestwood coalfield, which lacked rail access. It would then veer west to Kimberley and the Erewash Valley. There, at Awsworth Junction, the line split, running north to Pinxton, the other continuing to Deby and on to Eggington Junction, where it linked with the North Staffordshire Line. It would therefore obtain coal outlets to both the east and west. The scheme was authorised in 1872, the Colwick - Pinxton section being completed in 1875, the Awsworth - Eggington section starting in 1875 and being completed in 1878. The Awsworth - Pinxton line closed in 1963 followed by the Derby section in 1964. Goods traffic ended in 1968. (1) (2)
