Full Description
One monitored area lies within the footprint of terraced housing shown on the 1914 OS mapping, south of the Chesterfield Canal. Archaeological remains in this area were sparse, comprising a possible brick lined well, a brick drain, and two pits containing associated bone groups.
It should be noted that, while the drain appears to be associated with the terraced housing and is in an expected location and alignment, the pits and well are within the footprint of the terraced housing on the 1914 map. This appears to indicate that they pre-date the construction of the terrace; however, the well and the pit containing the neonatal calf were cut into the made ground overlying the drain, indicating that the drain may actually be earlier than the terrace and not related to its construction.
One pit was 2m long by 1m wide with a depth of 0.48m. It had steely sloping sides, a flat base and was filled by a friable dark blackish-grey silty clay. This deposit contained the remains of an associated bone group (ABG) of an adult horse. With no butchery present this most likely represents an animal burial following natural mortality.
The other pit was an oval-shaped feature with a length of 0.76m, width of 0.40m and a shallow depth of only 0.08m. It displayed gently sloping sides with a gradual break to a flat base. This pit contained the remains of a neonatal calf. No evidence of butchery or gnawing was observed suggesting that the deposition is consistent with the disposal of a natural death rather than deliberate processing or consumption.
The remains of a possible brick well were recorded to the south of the pit containing the calf. The structure had a diameter of 1.30m and consisted of at least seven courses of red bricks measuring 240mm X 120mm X 80mm. These were arranged in a circle without any bonding. The feature was investigated to a depth of 0.70m where excavation ceased due to safety concerns. This feature is presumed to be post-medieval in date.
