Abstract/Summary
A programme of archaeological mitigation at the Priory Shopping Centre, Worksop, Nottinghamshire.
The archaeological works were required as a condition of planning application 23/01263/FUL and comprised the monitoring of demolition, extension and groundworks associated with the redevelopment of the existing Priory Shopping Centre, including the construction of a pedestrian footbridge over the Chesterfield Canal.
The archaeological investigation took place intermittently between the 11th of May and the 5th of June 2026 and identified a series of post-medieval and modern archaeological remains across three monitored areas. These comprised structural remains including brick walls, floor surfaces, a possible well and canal-side foundations, together with two animal burials.
Historic mapping and the archaeological evidence suggest that several of the structural remains, particularly those identified within two areas represent surviving elements of the 19th-century malthouses and associated industrial buildings formerly occupying the canal frontage. The results contribute to an understanding of the industrial development of Worksop and the relationship between the Chesterfield Canal and the town's malting industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
