Full Description

English Heritage has been asked to assess the chimney at the site of the former Mansfield Brewery at Littleworth in Nottinghamshire. The brewery was established in the mid-C19 and remained in production until 2004. Much of the site has been demolished, including the buildings in the vicinity of the chimney underconsideration. No other buildings on the site are presently listed.
The chimney is a tall, tapering circular shaft which rises from a square base. The shaft in enmeshed in a grid of metal banding, and has been extended by with a metal tube secured by means of a metal harness.
Industrial chimneys are often the most prominent elements of industrial sites, and have emblematic status in areas where they once formed a dominant feature of urban landscapes, such as the mill communities of Greater Manchester or est Yorkshire. Chimneys aslo form distinctive elements of isolated rural industrial sites, such as the engine and boiler house complexes of the Cornish tin mining industry , or the exhaust chimneys of the long consensing flues forming part of the Yorkshire Dales' Lead smelting sites. Listed examples almost always form part of an industrial ensemble, and are only very exceptionally recommended for designation as free--standing structures,in circumstances where they are very early in date, where they form part of significant below-ground archaeological remains of national significance, or where they themselves are of exceptional structural or technological significance. This chimney fulfils none of these criteria, being relatively late in date, an element of a larger complex in which no other parts are listed, or of architectural, technological or historic interest.
