Full Description

One field S of Cocking Hill Farm is a plainly visible, rectangular earthwork. It lies on low ground, about 6ft above the water level. The ramparts, well formed, measure c 120yds N to S and 60yds E to W. There is a wide ditch, at present c 5ft deep, which is interrupted, as are the ramparts, at the NE corner. The corners are well-rounded and there are some traces of interior works (author suggests a C1-C2 Ro origin). (1)
A ditch forming a possible S angle of the earthwork is visible at SK 6826 6786. (2)
Most of this site now falls under a wartime Ordnance depot. Two small fields survive at SK 682 671, both are now very rough grass. Some fragmentary ditching is evident in the E one, but no coherent pattern could be determined. (3)
See L8582 for Ro finds, L5512 for trackway.
