Full Description

An L-shaped depression with an internal platform (NE corner of a large enclosure). (1) (2)

Site not permabulated because of spring crops. A slight rise was observed from the hedge to the W of the earthwork, but was insufficient for classification. (4)

Cropmarks appear to show a large moated site near the River Meden. Further examination is needed. 2 crossing linear features, to E. (5)

Morph: 60.2.1 Unknown Medieval Moat. 60.8.1 Unknown Trackway (6)

To the south of the evaluation site, a large possible ditch feature may be interpreted as the ditch seen RAF aerial photographs. This feature was interpreted as a possible moated site, but has never been investigated beyond observations based on the photograph and a cursory site visit in 1974. The geophysical survey undertaken prior to this evaluation could not access this corner of the site due to the area being flooded, possibly indicating that the survival of the feature as an earthwork. Although the feature was partally investigated during the evaluation, the lack of dating information from the lower fills makes ascertaining a date for it impossible. (7)

In the east of the trench, a large, possibly linear, feature aligned approximately north to south, was investigated. As it was only partially exposed, the actual shape of this feature could not be ascertained. The exposed measurements of the cut was 10m in across, at least 1.8m north to south and at least 1.4m in depth, although the base was not reached. It is possible that this feature is the possible moat that has been recorded in the south-western part of the site, although this cannot be conclusively determined from the limited information produced by this trench. Only the upper of six deposits contained in the feature produced finds: one fill yielded 17th to 18th century pottery and 4 indeterminate mammal bones, suggesting that the depression left by this open feature was backfilled or levelled out in the post-medieval period.
