Full Description

3 dug out canoes ... were found 15ft below the surface, during gravel quarrying in an old meander of the River Trent, --/12/1967. Canoe 2 was the smallest, probably about 18ft to 18ft 6in originally. Again flat-bottomed and nearly vertically sided, this vessel had a sharpended, slightly curving bow and stern. It was in a good state of preservation … a rectangle had been cut in to the gunwale, which seemed to have housed something projecting forward from inside the boat. Parts of a slat of wood had been used to repair a knot hole, nailed with iron nails. In the gunwale a crack contained caulking of a random mass of mosses rammed tight and still green when removed. In the rounded stern, slots on either side were possibly for a seat. The canoes are considered to be early IA - Ro. (1)
See L7993 for ? Ro beam, L795 for IA pottery, L796 and L798 for other canoes.
