Full Description
3 dug out canoes … were found 15ft below the surface, during gravel quarrying in an old meander of the River Trent, --/12/1967. Canoe 3 was the largest, with an original total length of about 33ft. In excellent condition. Like the others it was flat bottomed and vertical sided, with a punt-like bow, towards which the sides converged slightly from the most interesting part, the stern, with its extraordinary dovetailed sternboard and tie-bar. A broad oak plug underneath the sternboard may be explained as a repair to some patch of rot in the parent tree. The canoes are considered to be probably early IA - Ro. (1)
