Full Description
Complex of linear and curving features. Successive field boundaries ? Continues through the field to the N. Ice wedge patterns ? Pattern now extends to field to S. (1) (2)
Field 6, a small field in the centre of the survey area, produced markedly contrasting readings. This pattern ties in well with the cropmarks plotted from aerial photographs, and may well represent features of archaeological origin. (3)
The survey detected one weak linear feature centred at SK 7760 5772 on the northern edge of the survey area. There was also a suggestion of a curvilinear feature some 20m in diameter which may represent the remains of a ring ditch in the north eastern corner of the survey area. (4)
Three trenches were excavated within field 6. Trench 6a was a 10m square machine-excavated trench towards the centre of the field. A variety of features were visible including a number of post-hole like features, pits, and a curvilinear feature approximately 1.90m in diameter. 6b was a 7 x 2m hand excavated trench was positioned to examine an anomaly detected by a previous geophysical survey. The trench revealed a complex sequence of east-west linear features and finds included a complete Early Anglo-Saxon plain domestic ware pottery vessel. Trench 6c was a 10m square machine excavated trench, and was positioned towards the south side of field 6 to examine a rectangular cropmark feature. Linear features were found to intersect within the trench but the relationship was unclear. (5)
See L8324 for Med pot from here, see L10808 for other associated pottery and L2963 for cross refs to rest of complex.
