Full Description

Over the deposits lying on the tail of the rampart, a stone structure was erected. Of this, only a corner lay within the cutting, projecting from the west side. Three courses of well-coursed dry-built masonry still survived. No well-dated pottery was found immediately below the structure so that its date is not to be closely defined. It should be later than (1500), and is probably much later. The building must thereafter have been removed to be replaced by a large C18 house which fronted on to Lombard Street. Another stone wall four courses high (1.1m) was found running on the line of the town wall immediately over its robbed remains. Only the north face of this later wall could be revealed, the other side lying beneath Lombard Street. This structure may be as late as the C17, but it clearly survived in use much later than the other dry-built wall for it was incorporated in the footings of the C18 house. The foundations of that latest building, which stood until 1960, were represented immediately below the car-park surface by two roughly built stone walls, one running along the west side of the cutting, the other along the north. Other post-medieval features are of relatively minor significance and include post-holes and pits. (1)
