Abstract/Summary
Rotherham Sand and Gravel Ltd. are proposing an extension to their existing quarry at Scrooby Top, Nottinghamshire. The area of the proposed development lies within a known Romano-British field system. This document reports on results from the first phase of assessment, a geophysical survey.
The results of the geophysical survey were not clear, probably due to variations in the underlying geology/soils. The results of this survey must therefore be treated with caution.
A total of nine anomalies were identified. The Romano-British field system that has been identified from air photography has its main ditches running approximately east-west with subdividing ditches running north-south. Seven of the anomalies were orientated to the known field system alignment. However, this does not mean that these features are part of the Romano-British field system. The two anomalies not orientated to the known field system could be archaeological in origin.
