Abstract/Summary

The Portland Path documents the early history of the Butterley Company and traces the development of transportation in the area and the creation of The Portland railway to transport coal from the Portland collieries in Kirkby-in-Ashfield to the wharf at Jacksdale. Development of the Midland Railway is traced and historic maps are included as are results of an archaeological excavation of Jacksdale wharf.
