Abstract/Summary

Bloor Homes Ltd has commissioned Nexus Heritage to prepare an archaeological desk-based assessment for an area of land to the south of Willow Brook, Keyworth, Nottinghamshire in support of a planning application. The assessment comprises an examination of evidence found in the Nottinghamshire Record Office, Nottinghamshire Environment Record (hereafter ‘NHER’) and the Portable Antiquities Scheme. It also incorporates other available published and unpublished material. A site visit was conducted on the 12th March 2013 in dry, overcast conditions. There are 36 NHER entries within 1km of the proposed development site. Certain assets which, although located further than 1km from the assessment site, have also been taken into account and have been considered during the assessment process using professional judgment and discrimination. The report contains an archaeological and historical background of the site, a map regression exercise, photographs and results from a site visit and a table detailing the likely impact development may have on the historical landscape. The report concludes “The archaeological potential of the Site for archaeological remains asso-ciated with the Prehistoric and Roman period has been judged as high, low for the Saxon period and post-medieval period; and moderate for the medieval period. There is a scatter of Prehistor-ic and Roman find spots within 1km of the Site and this is indicative that ancient communities were active in the area and that it has seen settlement and exploitation for several millennia. However, the extent of the activity is currently unknown due to the lack of archaeological inves-tigations undertaken in the area.”
