Abstract/Summary
A desk-based assessment was undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd (CFA) on behalf
of Stuart Harrison on land at Retford Road, Walesby to evaluate the effects on the
cultural heritage resource by possible development works including the erection of log
cabins and a children’s play area. The proposed development was the erection of six portable Romany Gypsy Log Cabins, access tracks and children’s play area, including drainage and sewage treatment plant.
Various documentary and cartographic sources were consulted to inform the study.
There is archaeological evidence relating to activity on the site (+1km radius), dating from late prehistoric to modern times: features include – Cropmarks, possible Roman encampments, Saxon Church, a Motte and Bailey Castle at Haughton and pits containing items such as grenades dating to WW1.
The report concludes that development would have no direct impacts on any known cultural heritage resource. The study contains a cartographic regression exercise and modern photographs taken during a site walkover survey.
