Abstract/Summary

Trent & Peak Archaeology was commissioned by the Friends of Toton Fields to complete an inte-grated survey at the site of Toton Manor Farm Recreation Ground in Nottinghamshire as part of the Heritage Lottery-funded community archaeology project Toton Unearthed. The work included; • A lidar survey, • A geophysical (Geomagnetic) Survey • Laser scan topographic survey • A hand topographic survey • A walkover survey. Other work was undertaken as part of the written scheme of investigation, but are not considered in this report – this work includes: Borehole survey, including one pollen sample and one C14 date. Five test-pits, each one metre squared and no deeper than 1.20m, Two ‘evaluation-style’ trenches on the site of the Manor House, measuring 2m x 20m and the excavation of a 300 square metre open area on the proposed site of the water mill. The fieldwork was conducted as a community venture with the help of local volunteers. The land is owned and managed by Broxtowe Borough Council. Lidar survey produced a digital terrain model in which several earthworks were identified; the Manor House, medieval ridge and furrow field systems, previous water courses, possible field boundaries or trackways. The geophysical survey revealed; “structural remains belonging to Toton Manor House, remains of a possible mill and evidence of previous agricultural land-use, including possible field boundaries or trackways”. The results of the topographic survey - which was composed of walkover and hand offset survey and laser scan survey - identified and recorded in detail a number of earthworks; remains of medieval ridge and furrow field systems, Past water courses relating to past water management systems and land division, including probable mill leats or races. These results were then integrated into a Map regression a GIS overlay and a georeferenced master-plan was created. Images of results are not present in this report but a written description is. This report does not contain any images.
