Abstract/Summary
This archaeological assessment took place as part of an archaeological mitigation scheme set out as part of the planning proposal for development of 750 dwellings in the area – including a school, community hall, other open spaces and associated drainage and other groundworks. The aim was to establish the impact the development would have on the historic landscape. As part of the desk based assessment which took place sources including NCC HER, OS and other materials were consulted, a map regression exercise also took place. The results of the field walking and geophysical surveys and test trenches are also contained within this report.
The report concludes “Following desk-based assessment, field walking and geophysical surveys, the trial trench evaluation has confirmed the presence of enclosures and field systems dating to the Roman period. These are of local significance and where impacted on by the proposals will be subject to recording through strip, map and sample excavations. No deposits associated with the heritage asset of a Neolithic polished stone axe (L4766) were located”. The report finds the proposed development will have a moderate adverse impact on the undesignated archaeological heritage assets identified within the application area.
