Abstract/Summary
Pollen studies of the organic infill of an abandoned meander of the River Trent near Girton, Nottinghamshire (SKB827676) indicate that the sequence covers a period from approximately the Late Devensian (LDeIII/Younger Dryas/Loch Lomond stadial) (11, 000 to 10, 000 BP) to the later part of the Flandrian. The quarry is located around 12 km north of Newark on Trent and is approximately 800m from the modern channel of the River Trent. The floodplain of the Trent in this area comprises alluvium and river gravels with occasional pockets of wind blown sands overlying glaciofluvial sands and gravels over bedrock (Mercia Mudstone).
The report outlines six pollen assemblage zones from a 200cm section. Each pollen zone is described and extensively interpreted and analysed, describing the percentages of pollen recovered, the geomorphological conditions, and the comparisons to other sites.
