Title 'Rempstone Estate Land', Rempstone, Nottingham, A report on archaeological trial trenching 2013
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2014

Abstract/Summary

Between 9th September and 18th October 2013, Trent & Peak Archaeology, on behalf of CEMEX Materials UK Ltd., and under the direction of the archaeological consultant Adrian Havercroft (The Guildhouse Consultancy), conducted archaeological trial trenching in advance of a possible expansion of sand and gravel extraction at East Leake Quarry (Extension), Nottinghamshire. Trial trenching of the Proposed Development Area or ‘Rempstone Estate Land’ revealed a moderate level of archaeological activity across the area, with several concentrated areas of features and finds. Significant archaeological features were present in eight of the seventeen trenches, with substantial concentration of finds within four. Archaeological activity was absent in three trenches. Features included the continuation of a ditch recorded in previous episodes of fieldwork to the west and interpreted as a major land division dating to the Later Prehistoric period. Trenching also recovered evidence of significant Iron Age domestic activity and medieval strip cultivation.
