Abstract/Summary

A scheme of archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out during redevelopment groundworks at Story’s Yard, on the west side of Bridgford Road in the village of Kneeton, in the Borough of Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire. The redevelopment was to consist of the conversion and extension of barns into three dwellings, including the demolition of partially collapsed structures beyond repair. The standing buildings at Story’s Yard are the agricultural outbuildings of a late Georgian to Victorian farmstead, and a separate Historic Buildings Survey has been commissioned to record them. However, the site is located within an earthwork landscape representing part of the medieval settlement, and there is some evidence that the existing buildings may have replaced a much older farmstead. Planning permission for the redevelopment therefore included a condition requiring the implementation of a scheme of archaeological monitoring during the groundworks for the project. No evidence for occupation of the site pre-dating the construction of the post-medieval farmstead was seen during the monitoring programme.
