Abstract/Summary
A scheme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken during groundworks for a leisure centre at Bowbridge Road, Newark, Nottinghamshire.
The site is archaeologically sensitive, lying close to a Roman enclosure and associated cropmarks. An Anglo-Saxon artefact has been found nearby and prehistoric pottery located to the east of the site possibly indicates a settlement or funerary activity of the period in the area.
No archaeological features were apparent apart from a concentration of late 19th century bricks in the southeast part of the site. This demolition debris represents a building shown on maps dating from the late 19th to mid 20th centuries.
