Abstract/Summary

A scheme of archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out during groundworks associated with a programme of extensions and alterations to Kirkwood House, on North Church Walk in the town of Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire. Kirkwood House is a Grade II Listed Building of 19th-century and later date, within the Newark-on-Trent Conservation Area in the historic town centre; it occupies the former site of an 18th-century clay tobacco pipe manufactory, and one small outbuilding survives from this phase. Before the site was first developed at the beginning of the 18th century, it may have been part of the churchyard of St. Mary Magdalene church: a portion of the site directly adjacent to North Church Walk was certainly part of the churchyard until the mid-20th centuryKirkwood House is a Grade II Listed Building of 19th-century and later date, within the Newark-on-Trent Conservation Area in the historic town centre; it occupies the former site of an 18th-century clay tobacco pipe manufactory, and one small outbuilding survives from this phase. Before the site was first developed at the beginning of the 18th century, it may have been part of the churchyard of St. Mary Magdalene church: a portion of the site directly adjacent to North Church Walk was certainly part of the churchyard until the mid-20th century. No archaeological features were encountered during the monitoring programme, and no finds were retrieved; the monitored foundation trench did not penetrate the full depth of the modern topsoil.
