Abstract/Summary
A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was required during development groundwork for extensions to an existing dwelling at Ivy Nook, 4 Brown Lane, Barton in Fabis, Nottinghamshire.
The site was considered archaeologically sensitive, lying close to extensive prehistoric activity, including a possible Neolithic / Early Bronze Age henge or barrow. Artefacts of Neolithic and Bronze Age date have been found in the wider area. There are also several undated, but potentially prehistoric or Romano-British sites identified as cropmarks both to the east and west of the current site. A Scheduled Roman settlement and villa lie to the south of Barton in Fabis, though there are no known sites of this date within the village.
The site lies close to the core of the medieval village, a short distance to the northeast of the 14th century Church of St George.
The groundworks revealed a sequence of natural, subsoil and topsoil. The ground had previously been disturbed by service trenches. No archaeological features or finds were identified during this work.
