Title Margidunum Roundabout, A46, Rushcliffe, Nottinghamshire: Scheme of Archaeological Monitoring and Recording
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2023

Abstract/Summary

A scheme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken during groundworks associated with the replacement of road signage at the Margidunum Roundabout road junction, adjacent to the A46, in the Borough of Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire. The Margidunum Roundabout is situated on the line of the Fosse Way, a historic routeoverlying the Roman road that connected the cities of Lincoln and Leicester, and lies within the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Margidunum Roman Station, a settlement dating from the earliest days of Roman occupation in Britain and possibly associated with a military fort.Scheduled Monument Consent for the works was granted on condition that a programme of archaeological monitoring would cover all associated groundworks. No archaeological features were exposed: the roundabout lies on a raised platform, which is significantly higher than the surrounding landscape, formed of made-up grounds and imported topsoil that likely protects underlying archaeology.
